House of Sleep

By: Mark Blackford

I have built

around this house

a fence

of chain-link dreamcatchers

& still, we wake

to find bolt cutters

at the base of his bed;

our son, eyes closed,

hands clawing;

crying out for the father

he loses every night.

Mark was born and raised in Monticello, NY. He received a B.A. in English from Valdosta State University (GA, 2010), and presently he resides and writes in Woodridge, NY with his wife and children.
