Aubade; Quarantine: Day 24

By: Donna Henderson

Aubade

(April 1, 2020)

It’s hard to get up

from heaven, I say

as I rise from your

arms, from sheets

fragrant with funk

of our mingled sleep.

What? you mumble

to the pillow, Umm.

Then the furnace’s

hum, then the sandy

sound of the cat casting

litter bits backwards.

Then the silence before

the news.

Quarantine: Day 24

donna henderson, tell us how COVID19 is affecting you!

Donna Henderson writes, paints, practices psychotherapy and Reiki, and teaches yoga in Maupin, Oregon. During the pandemic, she feels very lucky be able to continue to do these things, and to be an introvert.

"Following the March 8, 2020 Oregon COVID lockdown, I immediately shifted my psychotherapy practice to a telehealth platform, and also took all my shopping online. What I noticed was that while that reduced the stress of one kind of exposure, it intensified the kind produced by the sharp increase in volume and urgency of messages flooding my inbox. “Quarantine, Day 24” was the “found poem” result. Meanwhile, a couple of poet friends and I decided to commit to writing a poem a day during poetry month by way of a set of daily prompts from Two Sylvia’s Press, the first of which was to write an aubade. Mine sort of wrote itself that morning, as it surfaced and reflected back to me the sense of quiet and the dread, both, of this time."
