Jane Gets a New Name

Kathleen Madrid

It should’ve ended in calamity

him gone and me neck broken

thrown from a broken horse.

Or shot somewhere in the badlands

no card left up my sleeve.

Love is weirder than a Dakota sky

before a twister hits

Rifle green, high fluorescing

Scarier than a rattler, better aim.

Love is a dead shot

calls us each by name.

Kathleen Madrid is a suburban housewife with a suburban husband and four suburban dogs. Sometimes she writes poetry but mostly she picks up poop in her suburban backyard. Love involves much more poop than she anticipated.
